I took the bus like usual today and I was sitting on a side seat. Two cute women enter it and since they couldn't find a seat, they stood next to me. They were engrossed in their conversation so I didnt think much when one of them started leaning on me. But she didnt stop leaning on me, this went on for the next 10 mins. I could feel her hips and stomach on my side. I was trying to look at my phone to distract myself but I popped a boner. It was very awkward as I couldn't go anywhere and I was starting to panic. I was looking around to see if anyone noticed by thankfully no one did. But wtf bruh. The bus was kinda crowded but she had more than enough space to stand properly. I got off the bus and holy shit, I felt like a million bucks. I never touched a women or even held hands with one so this was new. This was probably the best day in a long time for me. My depression actually got better for now. Is my reaction weird/creepy?

I don't expect to get one definite answer here, but Google can't give me one either. Some websites say they're your second cousin, and others say they're your first cousin once removed. I'm trying to figure out some family tree stuff so I need to know the difference between the (groups of) terms.

greetings americans, it an honest question. Outside of america i constantly see, especially recently as your elections are coming up that..well, it looks like a clownshow? Your recent two contenders where a hugely dept orange clown who can barely keep a coherent thought advertising a product in the whitehows, who had to have his name constantly mention when being talked to or he will be disinterested. The other one was a senile old fossil who couldnt even say a single sentence without his dementia kicking in. Now you have trump again as a runner up and he seems so openly incompetently corrupt its almost funny, than we have the senile man who (to my extremely limited knowledge) got replaced by this kamala woman because he was too old, said woman seems to be at least present in mind and appears to see trump as what he really is, a manchild (the famous clip of her basically laguhing at him) Like, are outside views are just so vehemently skewed by news, people and the like? Or am i just grossly misinformed?

As in, how do you get better outside of just doing debate, since coordinating practice takes time with the group and you can't do it a lot due to time restraints. That and I don't think I can do it in a manner frequent enough, and focused enough. I assume you just do drills with your role? If so, what would be best? For context, I got accepted as a 1st speaker for a college debate event in Asian parlament format. Experience wise, I am a beginner. Though I have done adjudications and had some practice with a newly formed club in the last year of high school, it was only isolated to that. No competitions with other schools or anything. Which is why I'm definitely not confident I can match a teammate of mine which has been doing debate for years and got to international level (to my knowledge). I'm not so much worried about my opponents per se, more so just that I don't want to hold my teammate back since as the 1st speaker, you have to set them up. I at least wanna do a somewhat decent job so that they can - to be blunt - "carry" us without worry. Right now, I've just been dabbling with using ChatGPT as a sort of coach/adjudicator and I think it's pretty effective? If there are other methods I can do alone/in downtime/outside group practice, I would like to try them at least given the short time left until the event. Sorry if this ended up a bit ramble-y, this was done on a whim and close to midnight, but yeah.

I have an older phone I can't let break so this is coming from a place of genuine concern heh, don't know if that would constitute a deadly shock to its system

I'm not really looking to hear from people who don't think this way, with answers like "insecurity", "toxic masculinity", etc. I want to hear answers from men who really detest men who sit to pee. Follow-up questions: - when you have to piss while shitting, do you stand up turn around and piss on your shit and then sit back down to finish shitting? - are you ever groggy in the morning? - how clean is your toilet and surrounding floor, and whose job is cleaning it? - what are your true passions in life?

What are your thoughts on the Lemmy ecosystem? I've been trying it out for the last week. I have my own opinions, but I'd like to hear others and see if we have common ideas on what is good/bad/indifferent about the Lemmy ecosystem.

You always hear the phase “9 to 5” and also the song with the same name. Assuming you include 1 hour worth of breaks (30 minute lunch and two 15 minute breaks), you’re only working for 7 hours a day which comes up to 35 hours a week. Now it feels like you have to work 8 hours a day (for a total of 40 hours of actual work), plus your other time off meaning you’re really there for 9 hours each day (for a total of 45 hours). Am i looking at that wrong, or did expected times change, and if so, when?

I thought it was the cologne they spray at the store, but even clothes I have delivered from a distribution center also have a smell that is very discernibly NOT Tide detergent. How?? What are they washing these clothes with to make them smell like that??

https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTFxS8UeJ/ This user appears on my TikTok feed all the time selling some product that she claims helps with acid reflux. As someone who has acid reflux, I have done a massive amount of research, and even read research papers and research studies on the subject to aid in my treatment of the illness. It's a pretty serious illness, and it's definitely not easy to treat or come up with a treatment plan, which is why there are so few medicines that are actually FDA approved for it... But this lady is out here pushing her medicine claiming it's a miracle cure to acid reflux. There are lots of these nowadays, not only on TikTok but on Facebook as well. People pushing these alternative treatments and making such ridiculous claims, half of them probably false. What I want to know is this. Why is this legal in the USA? Surely there should be some sort of governing body that prevents people from doing this and makes it illegal to spread this kind of misinformation?

The reason I ask, is I've been seeing alot of news and cases of Tesla's self driving acting up and being a point of contention. But back in 2016-17 my ex's uncle and aunt got a Model X when they first dropped and they "auto-drove" us like 50 miles without any noticeable issue. Was i just gambling my life or has the tech somehow gotten worse?

They think, "Jesus was cool. I like him, and I'm gonna try to be like him." Kind of like their guiding light is what would Jesus do? But there isn't a focus on identification, recruiting others, judging others based on their religion, fear of God, fear of punishment for sinning, respect for clergy as an authority, rituals, worship, etc. Basically, just the example of Jesus' life. inb4: Christian lol!! got em!

My GF is a ghost writer. The publisher has her write into files that are uploaded to a shared platform where editors and other creatives and execs tweak and move each chapter through several named states (represented by different folders), until it reaches "Final." She gets paid per X words. Come the day before the deadline for payroll, they (sometimes, often its late) open up the payroll system, and she has to re-upload the Final chapter to a folder in that tracking system. Tonight (when they opened the system for her), she has to enter 130 chapters by 10am tomorrow. It's not just moving a file. She has to download the Final chapter, select the text, copy/paste into the payroll tracking system, and then fix formatting that their silly system creates, like extra spaces, double quotes, etc. Each chapter can take minutes. These pasted chapters are then the final product. She has to stay up all night until its done, or she won't get paid on time. I feel like she's being taken advantage of, doing admin work for free. This feels like someone else's job. Is this even compliant with labor laws? Is it legal to have her do 12hrs of gruelling repetitive labor to move her completed text like this? Her being paid is conditional on her entering this data. I know hourly employees must be paid for hours worked, whether it was tracked or not, and tracking is an employer responsibility. Edit: added more words

In other countries, there is a lot of unexpected "suicides", and people simply cease to exist, but in CN they usually disappear for some time and when they "reappear" again, are not interfering, commenting or criticizing anymore in any way... What actually happens in that "transition" period? I'm genuinely curious, please provide some sources if there are some, or if this was answered somewhere else already.

Because I don’t, and pretending to feels dishonest. I’ll listen if they want to talk about it, but I’m not going to act interested, and I certainly won’t ask about it on my own. What I’m trying to figure out is whether people actually care, or if they’re just playing a social game that I’m simply not interested in. I’m probably on the autistic spectrum, which likely explains this to some extent. But that’s not an excuse - being an asshole is perfectly compatible with autism, so before dunking on me, please realise I probably agree with your criticism.

New home owner who has never had to hire a contractor before. Want to have chain link fence replaced and want to have put in white vinyl fence to match connected town home. It is just a 40 foot length I need replaced and will need to have one gate. As I get quotes, what kind of price should I expect to pay? What's considered fair and what's considered a rip off? EDIT: Thanks for all the feedback! I think I'm not in the right tax bracket to hire people to do this, so probably going to try to do it myself.

For instance I tried to update my prime video, and Amazon tells me I have to go to the website to manage my subscriptions. So I try to go to amazon.com and Firefox, and it opens the app instead of the website. So how do I get to the website so I can manage my subscriptions?

once a year I email my favorite flashlight manufacturer to ask if they've finally made a flashlight that just turns on and off when you push the button, and every year they're like, "no, but thanks so much for your feedback!" be honest, have any of you ever used the flashing feature on your flashlight? did it actually come in handy? handy enough that I have to scroll past it every single time I want to turn my flashlight on or off

So I've heard and seen the newest launch, and I thought for a private firm it seemed cool they were able to do it on their own, but I'm scratching my head that people are gushing about this as some hail mary. I get the engineering required is staggering when it comes to these rocket tests, but NASA and other big space agencies have already done rocket tests and exploring bits of the moon which still astounds me to this day. Is it because it's not a multi billion government institution? When I tell colleagues about NASA doing stuff like this yeaaaars ago they're like "Yea yea but this is different it's crazy bro" Can anyone help me understand? Any SpaceX or Tesla fans here?

> Researchers predict that by the year 2050, about half of the world's population will have myopia. Considering the target demographic, a significant number of potential VR users suffer from myopia already. Why are there no more VR headsets with adjustable focus? Several vendors offer replaceable lenses, or various addons to fit the glasses in, but the obvious solution used by the early cheap headsets like GearVR - adjustable distance between lenses and the display, is not being utilized for some reason. Is it a technical problem, economical problem? Are the modern lenses somehow tuned for a specific distance? ![](https://lemm.ee/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Flemmy.world%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2Fcaf358bb-11af-4da1-9530-8c829ee5f098.png)

I genuinely want to understand this. Are the defense systems we are sending so advanced that we can't let anyone else operate them? I know politics aren't allowed here, so i want to stress that I just want to know why this is happening.

How do these companies come to that conclusion? I think most people start to smell after only 24 or 48 hours max so how do these companies get 72 hours out of their testing? Im assuming they're fudging their numbers but at what point does it become false advertisement?

I'm talking about the ones that stay in north during winter, not migratory birds. I've noticed that birds like sparrows or tits (yes yes i know funny name) look more rotund in fall, but is that actually fatness or just them fluffing up?

I want tonpreface that I use exclusively Lemmy for my source for all news. I have no real social media accounts, will never be caught dead watching network or local news on TV (idc if im 37 its cartoons of gtfo lol). I use duckduckgo, Firefox for search and browser ever since I was tasked at work to keep a pulse on seo rankings. Id give cancer permission take my testicles befor ingive any fuckin company's ai permission to my data. If any of my hardware or software is using "AI" it is not at the front end or a configurable setting. What I'm building to is that I feel I put in more effort than most to not have the news I am fed influenced by anything more than what is happening in the world right now and the decisions news outlets make to report on. Now we have that established, I can elaborate on my question. When I see reports of protesting in the US (live outside of Buffalo, NY obligatory Go Bills!), I see primarily protests in opposition to an event or thing. I get the literal definition of protest, I'm speaking of the mission people are protesting under. Protesting police brutality, protesting oil line, fuck the insurection that doesnt fall under this example but there have been other actual protests against election results (see Buffalo ~~shithead~~ I mean mayor, Byron Brown's most recent election). Why are the so few: Protest for improved living conditions. Protesting for higher wages (ok I admit I forgot about this one till now. I do see unions protesting for this) Protesting for lower tuition costs. Not loan forgiveness but legitimate improvements to the corrupt financial structure allowing shit like Alabama's highest paid public office position is Nick fuckin Sabin. Protest for better medical billing regulations. Is it just the way news headlines and articles are written domestically vs globally? Is it a vernacular thing where US English grammatical structure dictates a protest must be against and never for? Or is it cultural thing where American laziness has evolved into something horrible needs to happen for action to happen (We don't become known as one of the fattest countries thanks our love of working hard). On the same note different page, is it that protest I see for better living conditions don't have the luxury to protest against something? Whether it be a question of freedom of speech, governing corruption or other similar issues. ORRRRR do you think I am off base here and there actually isn't a difference between domestic and other counties protests?

Hello everyone, This community regularly gets questions about the US elections. This is an important topic, but if there is something that does not lack on Lemmy, it's communities to discuss about politics: - !politics@lemmy.world - !progressivepolitics@lemmy.world - !usa@lemmy.ml - !political_weirdos@lemmy.world - !politics_no_um@lemmy.world - !politics@beehaw.org - !politicsunfiltered@lemmy.world - !pleasantpolitics@slrpnk.net And many others: https://lemmyverse.net/communities?query=politics I am personally subscribed to this community to learn general things (the question about the viking funeral legal aspect is a good example), and US elections questions seems to always bring more political debate than knowledge sharing. What do you all think? See you in the comments.
