Work Reform

Thanks for subscribing to /c/workreform@lemmy.world ! Now that we've grown (and are growing) so quickly, I've had some calls to discuss what this community is for! **What we stand for** As the sidebar says, Work Reform aims to increase the share of rewards reaped by the workers (as opposed to capitalists - be it shareholders or owners), and make work more equitable. We do NOT aim to abolish labor altogether - I personally don’t think that’s a viable societal system. There is no known system in human history where majority of the population can subsist without doing anything in return. **What we need to do** I see a few things necessary to reform the current economic system - let’s call it Awareness, Advocacy and Action: - Awareness means getting people to realise that the corporate propaganda they’re hearing isn’t the whole truth. - Advocacy means going out and telling people to join the cause, form a local union, etc. - Action means taking organized action - writing to politicians, organising dialogues and strikes, etc. **What this space can be used for** In short, all of the above! - To raise **Awareness**, you can post anything that talks about the issue of wage disparity. That means venting about scummy practices, that means posting news that counters corporate propaganda, and that means posting memes and screenshots of relevant tweets. - To engage in **Advocacy**, you can post news about organised action taking place elsewhere that we can celebrate or contribute to. - To take **Action**, you can start a local chapter of your union, organize/engage in online campaigns, etc. This space can be used to help gather people for that purpose. I personally think the most important thing now is to get more people to rally behind the cause (which means Action and Advocacy). But some of you have really good ideas on taking Action. So feel free to use this space for that purpose. As it grows, we can discuss how best to use this community as well, so the rules may evolve over time.

Bandai Namco has reportedly turned to the unspoken Japanese tradition of layoff-by-boredom by stuffing unwanted employees into oidashi beya, or "expulsion rooms." Employees ~~banished~~ reassigned to oidashi beya are left to do nothing, or given menial tasks at best. According to Bloomberg's unnamed insider sources, Bandai Namco has moved around 200 of its 1,300 person team to these rooms in recent months. The goal of sticking someone in an expulsion room is to literally bore or shame them into quitting, and Bloomberg's sources claim it has worked on around half the people Bandai Namco has stuck in there so far.

After a difficult year that’s seen multiple games fall short of sales expectations, original *Life Is Strange* developer Don’t Nod is implementing a “reorganization project” that could impact up to 69 jobs – or, as the French union that represents Don’t Nod workers points out, 29 percent of Don’t Nod’s Paris workforce. In light of this, the union, STJV, has denounced company leadership and called for workers to mobilize and defend their jobs. Don’t Nod has [previously said](https://www.ign.com/articles/life-is-strange-creator-dont-nod-has-rough-start-to-the-year-presses-pause-on-two-projects) that its latest releases, *Jusant *and *Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden*, fell short of “commercial expectations,” leading it to “temporarily” pause two other in-development projects. Despite a focus on the upcoming and thus far well-received *Lost Records: Bloom & Rage*, Don’t Nod [now says](https://www.dontnod-bourse.com/en/financial-information/press-releases?ID=ACTUS-0-88278) that “amid deteriorating results” it has been “compelled to consider a reorganization project to safeguard its competitiveness in an increasingly demanding and competitive ecosystem.”   STJV, which earlier this year [published a post criticizing Don’t Nod](https://www.stjv.fr/en/2024/02/dont-nod-ascension-or-free-fall/) for a burnout-inducing work environment in which "each project erratically follows another," has [deemed](https://www.stjv.fr/2024/10/a-dont-nod-le-seul-plan-pour-lavenir-est-le-plan-de-licenciement/) the layoff plan “the climax of a series of catastrophic decisions, denounced for a long time by workers' representatives.”   “Management is hiding being 'the state of the economy' and 'a very competitive market' as excuses for its failures, without ever questioning its inconsistent decisions, which have been harmful to the studio and its workers,” wrote Don’t Nod’s STJV union section in a post published today.

The 90-hour weeks part? The fact that he was doing it for a fossil fuel company? The fact that he's worth fucking $9.5 billion? Also, not in the headline, but- The fact that he did it back in the 90s when you could actually successfully open a small business and make money from it as if it's relevant today? The business is a franchise called Raising Caine's Chicken, which I've never had, but if you go by Yelp reviews, it's either the best restaurant that has ever existed or pretty mediocre. Also, Wikipedia says very little about his early life, but apparently his parents could afford to send him to a private catholic school, so he didn't exactly grow up improverished. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_Graves_(entrepreneur)
