I've installed it from F-droid but still. Fuck google. They really do need breaking up.

I heavily rely on Syncthing. Does anyone know what the outlook is for Syncthing-fork, or what the likelihood is of someone taking on maintenance of this version?

What you are saying is technically true. Humans are keeping numbers of animals down by culling them. But humans are also keeping numbers of animals up to make money from them. There would be no bovine TB if people weren't breeding millions of cows, keeping them in confined spaces and transporting them all over the place.

GIMP 3.0 is over 96% complete! The GIMP team got sick at the Libre Arts conference over the summer, hence the setback to the release schedule but they are now back making good progress. Along with non-destructive editing and a colour overhaul we've all been waiting for, longstanding critics of the UI/UX will be pleased to hear that GIMP are setting up a UX repository and are looking to build a dedicated team of designers to develop this. All of these things look set to make the GIMP project feel a lot more current and dynamic. I can't wait! And if anyone wants to help out it looks like testing/reporting, donations and updating the help manual are all welcomed by the project at the moment.

Yeah, because if Trumps causes a massive disaster or simply undermines regulation they are the ones who are in a prime position to buy everything up. Trump is not a serious authoritarian and control freak like Putin who is a threat to everyone within reach. He is a liability to the status quo. Whether you like it in its current state or not, any change to the system is an opportunity to make money. Trump is the most likely candidate to change the system - by fucking it up most likely - so they back him.

They are betting against everything except themselves.

Man I think it's already done, and been done for a long time, without AI. So much of who we are now is based on and informed by what we've read and watched online. It's our been our dominant frame of reference, language and value system for quite a while. We are the AI.

While I agree that it makes Mastodon less entertaining I also think that it makes it a lot more fair, representative and trustworthy as a lens through which to observe & participate in social discourse and share information and opinions. That in itself will probably mean that it remains less popular but I think it's also what makes it more valuable IMO. We need to calm down from the urgency of the digital dopamine cycle, for many reasons. If social media is a truly human media then it should be boring at times because that is a human reality that we are adapted to.

Where were his Thomas The Tank Engine pyjamas?!

Seriously though; while the boys at state school were a lot harder, if a posh kid finally lost it it was always something extremely psychotic like this.

From what I've experienced of Krita it is absolutely lovely for drawing and I know a lot of people really enjoy using it for general graphic design too. I think it might still be a bit too complex for the sort of people and uses I have in mind though. I think what they need is: Pick a page size, make a box in a very basic and visually obvious way, type in the box. Make another box in a very visually obvious way, put a picture in the box which automatically scales. Move boxes around.

Of course this is what GIMP and Krita do, but because they incorporate so much control and extra functionality there are also a lot of things that can 'go wrong' for a novice without them knowing why. I'm actually wondering whether Libreoffice Draw or even Writer might be the best option! I'm not aware that they have any image manipulation tools though...

Remember that many of their customers are young contractors on credit who have valued 'brand identity' over more practical concerns.

You don't see many old boys on their tractors, in the same way that you wouldn't see many of them using Apple computers.

My bet is that a decent proportion of the John Deere owners who are up in arms about this are those who bought one while they were young and impressionable, then realised that they were getting punished for it and that they couldn't offload it on their younger contemporaries because they wanted a new one and couldn't offload it on their older contemporaries because they were too wise. These modern tractors are enormous investments.

  • Can anyone recommend a simple and noob/nonprofessional-friendly cross-platform app for simple graphic design and photography uses? I normally recommend GIMP for this but for some people who I help with their projects it's overkill and not worth learning for infrequent use. What can I recommend/teach such people to use, which is more stripped back? Common use cases are putting together basic flyers & ads, restaurant menus, cropping photos etc.

I would love to buy from them and their new Starbook mk7 is actually my first choice but it's about 50% more expensive than Slimbook's equivalent. Starlabs would be much easier to get customer support from though and their model comes with Coreboot, which I would like. Perhaps I should by a scratch card or go down to Hampshire and try and haggle the price down!

Yes, I'd noticed that Tuxedo do not apply VAT at the checkout when UK is selected as the delivery location. Perhaps I should contact Slimbook and see if they can do the same for me.

I'm expecting an increase in capital gains tax to get heavily attacked in the media and by the free market (pro-inequality imo) crowd, for predictable reasons. And they may even be right that in the long term the amount of direct revenue it raises is not significant. BUT if a secondary consequence of this is an offloading of assets (particularly houses) I think it could be great. As the article reports; "Wealth managers have reported a flurry of investors rushing to sell second homes and other assets before the budget." Am I right in reading this policy as a disincentive to hoarding and rent-seeking? I don't think Labour will have the guts to come out and say this is something they're actually aiming for. What do you think?

    Evidence Latency

I'm a casual space enthusiast, so forgive me if this is ignorant, but is it typical that there is a delay (of several days or more) between hearing news about the success of a given space project and then the photos of it being published? I feel like I've noticed it a few times... And if so, why? Are photos hard/slow to transmit or make?

Does anyone know how I can select my audio output via the command line? I'm frequently switching between using my monitors inbuilt speakers and a USB audio interface and I'm finding it laborious to navigiggerate graphically through the settings in GNOME to do so. What I'd like to do is set up a couple of bash aliases and do it in my terminal. What's the best way for me to do that? Many thanks

We have a past which is chequered, like veryone else's. Successes, failures, and things which have changed in our thinking and our values. The systems we have produced are incomplete or not current - they don't match up to what we need or want. And there is stasis and inertia in them; they have not changed for a few generations. Change *will* come at some point though, whether we have a say in it or not. What shall we do to define, advocate and enact our stake in that change? What are the frontiers that we need to acknowledge and approach? What are the spirits/ideas of our culture that we can harness to make Earth a better place? I spend too much time commenting on and witnessing failed ideas and the consolidation of power to no worthwhile end. It's now my belief that the only earnest thing to do is to move forward with an imagining and an eventual implementation of systems which emerge *beside* those which are already established. None of us want to go against the system in our own lives because it punishes us if we do. So, let's make another one beside it which is better. That the old one doesn't apply to. What are your thoughts? Let's first have a discussion about our principles and concepts. Please speak openly, freely and optimistically - it might be the most important thing you ever say.

Does anyone have experience with a good privacy-focussed VPS provider? What do you recommend? I've been using 1984 for quite a while and they have been solid but they have just put their prices up. It's still affordable but I thought it would be a good time to have another look at what else is out there.

I'm thinking of getting a new laptop which uses Coreboot. The reason is that I'm into FOSS and would also like to not have IME installed. Currently I'm looking at Starlabs' Starbook, which can optionally be bought with Coreboot. Can anyone help me evaluate it? I would likely use Debian 12 as my OS. Many thanks

Whatever we might think of the new Labour government's leadership, I think this shows why we need a successful few years. Perhaps I'm being paranoid but if the country is disappointed with Labour I don't want them to resort to electing an even more right wing version of the Tories further down the line.

I have some video files which have stereo audio tracks that were created from a mono source. I think the mono signal got sent to the right channel and not the left because when I created the files in OBS I forgot to select mono audio recording. When I play the videos all the sound is on right side only. Hope that makes sense... How can I either mix down/combine the stereo tracks intoto a single mono track or replace the empty left channel with the audio content of the right channel? Is there a way to do this without reencoding the whole video file? I could do it in a video editing gui by copypasting the audio track to the other empty channel but I wonder if there might be a more efficient way of doing it. An ffmpeg command perhaps? Many thanks
