I'm not really talking about eating them out of desperation but rather just as an additive in food, however I see where your coming from and it's a pretty reasonable response.

I agree to an extent but if you take a look at one of the best diets in the world for a moment the Mediterranean diet has lots of plants, fish and rarely meat

Come on give them some credit in the Balkans were around 50 that's good enough if you ask me.
Honestly I haven't tried it but I wouldn't mind certain things containing bug parts (on purpose) to make up for protein in them. And honestly that crunch sounds quite good.

I really think marine aquaculture needs a breakthrough like aquaponics

This is incredibly insightful as someone who want to get into the business, I agree that as always the governments are like 2 years behind new production methods and I wish that wasn't the case.

We're all going to make it, as long as we keep pushing for the future we want

I'm hoping to see more successful large scale operations perhaps with some aspects of aquaculture/aquaponics integrated

Although I was more talking in the hydroponics sense, this also reminded me you can do something similar with soil. Also good luck with that I hope you get lots of herbs

That is a very interesting perspective, thank you for making me think of things in a slightly different light. But yes I agree any type of advancement in farming from this point in human history and onwards should be attempting to achieve 2 things:
-
Dont poison the planet (we kind of need it)
-
Make food preferably with some variety

Honestly for me I think if we could grow grain vertically this would've been something we all jumped on

I agree agrivoltaic farming is much more easy to implement for farmers, and although droughts and such will be more common I think the main appeal is what you said freeing up space for nature to reclaim.

I see your point, but I do still think that vertical farming has its place in a solarpunk future maybe not in the sense of mass production but more personal like a veg garden or something similar.
Sidenote better than hydroponics is aquaponics providing more and better quality food.
**Vertical farming, the best solution to support an ever growing population or just a scam?** IMHO it has a lot of potential but not being able to grow grains really is something that should be tackled sooner rather than later. But I could see this being used by self sustaining communities to provide lots of food while using very little space. And it's technically more environmentally friendly than just using vast stretches of land to produce the same amount of food.
