Group sues Washington governor over bill that allows sex change surgery for minors without parental consent

America First Legal, a nonprofit group headed by former Trump policy adviser Stephen Miller, has filed a lawsuit against Washington Gov. Jay Inslee to stop the enforcement of a state law that allows minors to get sex-reassignment surgeries without their parent’s permission. The conservative group says the Senate Bill 5599, signed by Gov. Inslee in May, "creates a dangerous incentive for minors who disagree with their parents on ‘gender-affirming care’ to run away to a shelter or host home." SB 5599 allows host homes "to house youth without parental permission." Furthermore, the host homes do not need to notify parents about where their kids are or if they are getting medical interventions "if there is a compelling reason not to, which includes a youth seeking protected health services." The "protected health care services" included "gender-affirming care," which for minors arbitrarily included anything prescribed by doctors to treat dysphoria, the bill said. "Gender-affirming treatment can be prescribed to two-spirits, transgender, nonbinary, and other gender diverse individuals," the bill states. Democratic lawmakers at the time described gender-reassignment surgery as "life-saving."

Jeffrey Ferguson, the Orange County judge who allegedly texted a confession to court staffers after killing his wife in front of their son, made a mumbling drunken confession to responding Anaheim police officers captured on bodycam video and asked them to shoot him, according to court filings. The son who allegedly witnessed the shooting told investigators his parents had been fighting for most of the evening and that his father was drinking heavily. "The shooting stemmed from an argument that began earlier that same evening," prosecutors wrote in a bail motion. "While arguing at dinner (at a restaurant nearby their residence), Defendant pointed his finger at his wife…in a manner mimicking a firearm." The arguing continued at home, and Sheryl Ferguson told her husband, "Why don't you point a real gun at me?" prosecutors alleged. That's when Ferguson is accused of pulling a .40-caliber Glock pistol out of an ankle holster and firing a single shot through his wife's chest. "He shot her at close range," Deputy District Attorney Chris Alex wrote in a bail motion. "He did so while intoxicated. His adult son witnessed the homicide." Their son called 911 and attempted CPR, but she died from her injuries. "Shortly after Son's 911 call, Defendant himself called 911 to report (vaguely) that his wife had been shot," prosecutors wrote. "When asked whether he shot his wife, Defendant responded that he did not want to talk about it now."

The mother of a man accused of murder in the Florida panhandle is now also behind bars after police discovered text messages allegedly showing her help plan the shooting death of a woman working inside The Home Depot. Keith Agee, 20, was arrested by the Escambia County Sheriff's Office Friday afternoon in connection with the deadly shooting of 18-year-old Brooklyn Sims hours earlier at the home improvement retailer on Davis Highway in Pensacola. Police did not share the relationship between Agee and Sims, but Pensacola news outlet WEAR said the two have a 2-year-old daughter together. The sheriff's office revealed Monday night that Agee's 50-year-old mother, Sheila, was involved in planning the targeted attack. "According to text messages, it’s clear that Keith Agee’s mother, Sheila Agee, knew and participated in the plan to kill Brooklyn Sims. Additionally, text messages between mother and son highlight the mother’s involvement in helping locate the victim," the ECSO wrote on Facebook.

Drinking water consumed by millions of Americans from hundreds of communities spread across the United States is contaminated with dangerous levels of toxic chemicals, according to testing data released on Thursday by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The data shows that drinking water systems serving small towns to large cities – from tiny Collegeville, Pennsylvania, to Fresno, California – contain measurable levels of so-called “forever chemicals”, a family of durable compounds long used in a variety of commercial products but that are now known to be harmful. The water of as many as 26 million Americans is contaminated, according to an analysis of the new EPA data performed by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a Washington DC-based non-profit. Studies have linked the chemicals to cancers, immunodeficiencies, reproductive harms and developmental effects in children. Scientists and environmental advocates have increasingly warned about the harms of chemicals like perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in recent decades, leading to an agreement between the the EPA and chemical manufacturers such as DuPont and 3M to phase out PFOA by 2015. However, lasting pollution of the environment and human bodies with forever chemicals continues. Studies show nearly all Americans have some level of PFOA, PFOS, and similar chemicals, scientifically known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), circulating in their bodies. Additional analyses calculate that hundreds of millions of Americans are probably exposed through drinking water contamination. But, the EPA’s testing program, part of a 27-year-old effort to sample the nation’s drinking water for unregulated chemicals, offers the most robust look into exactly which communities are polluted. The data released on Thursday is the first round of a program that will test most US water systems serving more than 3,300 Americans for 29 different forever chemicals, along with the metal lithium, over the next three years. This first batch, which analyzed data from about 2,000 systems across the country, already spells trouble. According to the data, 220 water systems found some level of PFOA, PFOS, or both chemicals in their drinking water. That means about one in 10 drinking water systems contain the two most notoriously dangerous forever chemicals.

The deadly incident unfolded Tuesday afternoon at the popular Franconia Falls in Lincoln, New Hampshire, when Bagley's 10-year-old son slipped and fell into one of the pools near the falls, according to the state Fish and Game Law Enforcement Division statement. "He could not get out of the pool as it was a fast, circulating current. The mother jumped into the river to help her child and began to immediately have trouble," according to the statement. The two other Bagley children, one an 18-year-old, dove into the water in an attempt to rescue the mother and brother, officials said. "They were able to get their brother out of the water, but in doing so, another brother became lodged in the boulders and could not escape," according to the statement. Sean Bagley also dove into the water in a desperate attempt to find his wife, officials said. "He eventually found her on a rock and immediately began CPR. Unfortunately, she was unable to be revived," according to the Fish and Game Law Enforcement Statement.
