I keep a bouquet of dry pasta on my desk that I absentmindedly munch on while I work.

Sometimes I'll eat a whole head of cabbage over a day peeling it leaf by leaf.

Where I live it's illegal to have them expire. They can:

    • Provide a spending limit for a vice
    • frees the user of the need to spend it responsibly
    • a safer way to spend money online and an alternative to a credit card.

I don't mind getting a steam gift card or an lcbo (liquor store) card, I know what liquor and games I like more than the people gifting. An Amazon gift card is much more annoying because it's an everything store, it's money that has to be used unethically. A costco giftcard is a nice hack to allow you to shop at the store without a membership, I used them like that until I reached a point where the membership paid for itself. I think they have a place, I also think they are often abused and should be regulated more than they currently are where I live. If they have an expiry they are a scam.

    Here is amnesty international

It basically comes down to trials being far more expensive , the required solitary confinement being more expensive, more appeals. Lawyers cost much more than prison meals.

Tribal start is meant to be exploring the early game tech, I would say most of my tribal starts don't involve ever getting electricity full stop. This is inherently more challenging than a normal run. It sounds like you might like a standard start with a transhumanist ideology which speeds up research and focuses on late game.

I also am surprised you were recommended arid shrubland. Temperate forest is, IMO generally much easier. In either case you should look at the temperature range and growing season of your tile in addition to the biome.

Lastly from a purely philosophical POV unless you are the type to pore over the wiki/guides and min/max losing is going to happen and is part of the experience, don't see it as a negative, see it as a lesson and a fun journey. Personally the story you tell seems pretty entertaining. IMO having a run where everything goes right is kinda boring.

In a forum system that sorts by last comment that can be annoying. Which is why most systems seem to have moved away from that, it was one of the big innovations of reddit back when it started. But in a format where it doesn't get more visibility for getting comments I don't see why it's a bad thing, just stop reading when you deem the topic done.

During brief window between reddit apps dying and the old archive rule being revoked getting comments on old tech support posts with follow ups and/or additional questions was pretty great, and definitely worth the occasional whitenoise posts ("thanks!" " seeing the same problem in 2024" "I clearly didn't read the whole thread and am asking something already answered" etc etc).

Unless I've missed something harris says she does not support a ban on fracking not that she wants to expand fracking. That's an important distinction, as opposing fracking is not the same thing as supporting a ban.

I think the article you linked contains An error, if you click through to the polling itself, you find this:

More than four in ten (42%) Pennsylvanians support an outright ban on fracking.

    More importantly:

Six in ten (60%) Democrats, 38% of independents, and even a quarter (26%) of Republicans support an outright ban.

So among independents and Republicans support is actually quite low.

    Opinion time:

So in my opinion harris stance seems to align more with the dominant view on fracking, that it should be discouraged but not outright banned and is especially a winner among independents.

From a wider perspective, I think building up solar and wind has greater impact and takes less political willpower (later on in that polling you can see wind and solar are supported by 90+% of people). so i think harris is making a smart choice long term. Fracking doesn't make economic sense in a world with established solar and wind infrastructure as even a small drop in demand can push fracking into unprofitable territory.

You can see this somewhat in the current administration, people like environmentally friendly policy when it isn't framed as environmental policy. There is a reason the biggest us climate bill ever is called the inflation reduction act and not the ghg reduction act.

I had one on an incisor as a teenager (a wrestling match knocked it loose and it formed an Abscess). It isn't exactly fun, but it won't hurt much except the needle at the beginning. I was only under local, but i hear sometimes you get the option to get laughing gas, I would take the gas if you can. It was significantly more painful before the operation than during. The vibrations are pretty intense at times and you have to stay in a pretty uncomfortable open mouth position for an hour (although they prop your mouth open for you). My least favourite part was when they clamped a uv lamp around the tooth, which felt like a big pressure for me. My mouth and tongue also got very dry, and the squirts of water they provided didn't do much to make that better. I don't remember much of the after care but it wasn't bad.

10years later fwiw, my root canal developed an infection and I needed dental surgery to clear it out. During this the local numbing was ineffective for some reason and the dentist had to go in 3 times to try and renumb it, but it never really worked. That really really hurt, but it is not exactly a typical case.

IMHO you don't get to call them that until they call you dad, and that doesn't necessarily happen the moment you get married.

My mother in law married someone while my wife was an adult. She would never call him dad, and he would never call her daughter, that doesn't mean they aren't family or aren't close.

Health Canada guidance is a bit more nuanced

Post-exposure prophylaxis or testing of a bat is generally recommended after direct contact with the bat (refer to Bat Exposure) because it is very difficult to ensure that a bite did not take place

Bat exposure: Post-exposure rabies prophylaxis following bat contact is recommended when both of the following conditions apply:

    • There has been direct contact with a bat, AND
    • A bite, scratch, or saliva exposure into a wound or mucous membrane cannot be ruled out.

Direct contact with a bat is defined as a bat touching or landing on a person.

In a child, a bat landing on clothing could be considered a reason for intervention, as a history to rule out a bite, scratch or mucous membrane exposure may not be reliable.

From 1998 to 2009, NACI recommended that people who may not be aware of or able to report a bat bite (e.g., sleeping person, young child, cognitively impaired) be offered intervention if a bat was found in the room with them. This recommendation was revised (as described above) in 2009 based on the rarity of human rabies related to bats (one case in Canada reported approximately every 5 years). Analysis conducted in Canada estimated that a case of human rabies related to bedroom exposure to a bat (i.e., finding a bat in the room of a sleeping person with no recognized physical contact with the bat) is expected to occur in Canada once every 84 years. In addition, it has been determined that, to prevent one case of rabies from bedroom exposure to a bat, using a conservative estimate, 314,000 people would need to be treated.

Nerds like us can argue until we are blue in the face, 99% of the public will continue to call it Linux. GNU/Linux is a good way to prompt those not in the know to learn some of the history while still being understandable as Linux, that is the current and best solution, I do not think it is unresolved.

I think 2 things would improve things:

    • allow a small amount of control over the direction of the ragdoll, similar to games like goatsimulator and such to help prevent getting ragdolled into death pits and losing all your sample and equipment.

    • grant a small window of ragdoll immunity (not damage immunity to be clear) after being ragdolled and after landing from a reenforce to stop endless ragdoll loops
