Blender for Thinkpad T480s
  • bjoern_tantau bjoern_tantau 11h ago 100%

Don't know about the T480s, but the T580 with nVidia graphics has abysmal thermal throttling making the nVidia graphics useless. Blender basically cannot use the GPU making it harder to work with.

What GPU does the laptop you picked out have?

8 GB RAM also seems to be on the low side for me.

But maybe it's enough for 3D printing. No idea.

  • Is this true about Generation gap in Piracy?
  • bjoern_tantau bjoern_tantau 2d ago 100%

Trouble is that there are enough millennials who also have absolutely no clue about computers. Between dude-bros who won't touch that nerd shit and girls who got told by their nerd boyfriend's that the computer will start to burn if they click anything besides their allowed icons a vast majority of people are glad if they know how to turn on the computer and print out their document.

Yes, there are probably a lot more computer literate millennials than in other generations. But even there it pretty much depends on family and friends. And in a pirate community on Lemmy most of the people will belong to the tech savvy bubble.

In our friend group even the most computer illiterate kid knew how to set up a LAN without a DHCP server. Their younger siblings had no idea a LAN was even a thing.

My wife's ex always told her that she couldn't understand how to work with a computer. Her older brother who works in IT wouldn't explain anything to her either. They were pretty astonished when they heard that she had installed a GPU by herself (which most people here know is trivial). Which gave her enough confidence to fix her VCR by herself.

  • We just got more evidence that long Covid is a brain injury
  • bjoern_tantau bjoern_tantau 3d ago 100%

The most common "symptom" of Long Covid (Long Covid is really just an umbrella term) is ME/CFS which has existed long before Corona. So the chance is big that other diseases can cause similar damage. Epstein-Barr-Virus is already known to also lead to ME.

But reducing it just to the brain seems too simple for me. I'm pretty sure I've read of similar damage in other organs as well. And as someone with Long Covid it feels like my whole body is fighting some kind of inflammation. My guess is that it's somewhere in the immune system. But the immune system isn't just a single organ either, making this extra hard to pin down.

Mind you, it doesn't help being gaslit by doctors for decades either.

Either you learn how to make the assets, use free ones, buy them or commission someone.

Hard to believe, because it's such a high quality product. But every asset used in Diarrhea 4 was free. Apart from the fart noises. Those were made entirely by me.

According to the Russian state media outlet TASS, the first Russian company to use the mechanism will be Astarta-Agrotrading, which will supply Pakistan with chickpeas and lentils. Pakistan’s Meskay + Femtee Trading Company will reciprocate by providing mandarins and rice. > > Under the terms of the agreement, Russia will export 20,000 tons of chickpeas, while Pakistan will supply an equivalent amount of rice. Another contract stipulates that Russia will send 15,000 tons of chickpeas and 10,000 tons of lentils in exchange for 15,000 tons of mandarins and 10,000 tons of potatoes. > > [...] > > While monetary transactions are under increasing scrutiny due to international sanctions against Russia in retaliation for its invasion of Ukraine, barter schemes offer companies a way to circumvent complications by exchanging goods directly rather than involving bank payments. Such deals help avoid attention from monitoring organizations tasked with ensuring compliance with sanctions. > > This is not Russia's first exploration of barter trade as a solution to payment issues. In August, Reuters reported that Russia had been in discussions with China about resuming barter trade, particularly in metals and agricultural products. However, that project has been slow to gain momentum, as individual companies have struggled to meet the specific needs of both sides.

    Hi all! I have a Debian stable server with two hdds in a md RAID which contains an encrypted ext-4 filesystem. ``` sda 8:0 0 2.7T 0 disk ├─sda1 8:1 0 1G 0 part │ └─md0 9:0 0 1023M 0 raid1 /boot ├─sda2 8:2 0 2.7T 0 part │ └─md2 9:2 0 2.7T 0 raid1 │ └─mdcrypt │ 253:0 0 2.7T 0 crypt / └─sda3 8:3 0 1M 0 part sdb 8:16 0 2.7T 0 disk ├─sdb1 8:17 0 1G 0 part │ └─md0 9:0 0 1023M 0 raid1 /boot ├─sdb2 8:18 0 2.7T 0 part │ └─md2 9:2 0 2.7T 0 raid1 │ └─mdcrypt │ 253:0 0 2.7T 0 crypt / └─sdb3 8:19 0 1M 0 part ``` I'd like to migrate that over to BTRFS to make use of deduplication and snapshots. But I have no idea how to set it up since BTRFS has its own RAID-1 configuration. Should I rather use the existing MD array? Or should I take the drives out of the array, add encryption and then add the BTRFS RAID inside that? Or should I do something else entirely?

I migrated my wife's PC after a forceful Windows 11 update to Linux. I made a backup of her files by doing an rsync of almost the complete C: drive onto an external drive formatted with exFAT. This was a grave mistake. After the Linux installation we noticed that several files were missing and older files were back. My current guess is that I was somehow copying from an old snapshot instead of the current state. I rsynced everything except for the Windows folder. Does anyone know if there is any chance of getting our filea back? Amd what actually happened? Edit: After several weeks I finally found the answer. There are two drives in the laptop. But Linux didn't see the NVME drive because it does not support "RST with Optane". As soon as I switched the SATA mode over to AHCI I could see the system drive with the lost files.

I can't read long texts anymore, so I don't really understand what's going on. My internal bullshit-o-meter tells me that it's being blown out of proportion. Can someone summarise it? And what should I do? Make some configuration adjustments? Switch to LibreWolf or another fork?

HandOfBlood playing a demo of the remake at the Gamescom. His commentary is in German and the game is in English. He's not playing as the nameless hero but as Nyras. The demo is a small prequel set 2 years before the full game. They basically made it to test out the modding of the game. It's supposed to get full mod support. Feels pretty much like Gothic. Good atmosphere, janky animations and it even crashed twice. Good times.
